The Effects of Stress on Health
Stress is an inevitable part of human life, and its impact on health cannot be overlooked. Stress can have a significant effect on physical and psychological well-being. Chronic stress has been associated with various health problems, including cardiovascular diseases, weakened immune system, gastrointestinal issues, and mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression. According to Nevid et al. (2018) prolonged exposure to stress can disrupt various bodily systems, leading to long-term health consequences.
The General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) describes the physiological stress response (Nevid et al., 2018). It consists of three stages: the alarm stage, the resistance stage, and the exhaustion stage. In the alarm stage, the body activates its fight-or-flight response, releasing stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. This stage prepares the body to face the stressor.
